North is always up, like Google Maps.

Pros

  • Light reaches the main living area from two directions.
  • The walk in pantry is about 4 m from the garage door, so the shopping goes straight in.
  • Windows on two sides of the living area let a breeze through.
  • A generous main bedroom, 4.05 x 4.02 m.

Cons

  • About 16% of the floor is hallway, space you heat and clean but cannot use.
  • The garage is 5.5 m wide inside; a double garage should be 6 m.

Orientation notes

Chevron 31 by sundancerhomes.com.au is a 2 storey house drawn so its main living areas face north for free winter warmth and natural summer cooling. On this page the floor plan is rotated so north is up, the same way Google Maps shows a site.

It suits a block with the backyard to the south, where the street and driveway sit to the north.

At 11.8 metres wide by 16 metres deep (about 286.51 square metres of floor area), the house needs a build width of roughly 13 metres once you allow for side setbacks. Across New South Wales, turning the living areas to the north keeps a home warm through a coastal or inland winter and easy to shade in summer.

Dudils only lists this plan because an architect reviewed it and confirmed the living areas can face north on a real Australian block. Use the search on this page to check it against your own block width, depth and driveway side before you talk to the builder.
