Is a Kitchen Seen From the Front Door Bad Feng Shui?

Most practitioners say yes. The kitchen holds the stove, which feng shui links to the health and wealth of the household, and a kitchen in plain view of the front door is said to leave that energy exposed to whatever comes in.

It is the third of the six layout checks behind the feng shui friendly label on Dudils, explained in the guide to feng shui house plans. Schools of feng shui differ on many of these rules, so treat this as a layout check, not a full reading by a practitioner.

Why does feng shui keep the kitchen out of sight of the entry?

Because the stove is treated as the heart of the home, tied to nourishment and prosperity. Seeing it first on arrival is said to unsettle the energy of the home and turn visitors' minds to food. Many practitioners also say the cook should not stand with their back to a door, and a kitchen facing the entry often puts them there.

What does an architect see in a kitchen visible from the front door?

Privacy and mess. A kitchen in view of the front door shows the benches, the dishes and the bins to every courier and visitor, and the cooking smells reach the entry first. In an open plan home, a straight view from the door to the kitchen usually means the living areas are on show too.

A turn or a short wall at the entry gives the household rooms the street cannot see into.

How is the kitchen check read on a floor plan?

It fails when you could stand at the front door and look straight into the kitchen, with the bench, the cooktop or the sink in view. It passes when a wall, a turn in the hall or another room hides the kitchen from the door. A kitchen at the far end of an open plan room still fails if the line from the door reaches it unbroken.

How do you fix a kitchen that can be seen from the front door?

Break the view. A screen, a slatted partition or a tall plant at the entry does it, and a rug and a console table in the hall turn the path. In the kitchen, a cooktop on an island facing the room means the cook is not standing with their back to the door.

At the design stage, a short wall or a butler's pantry between the entry and the kitchen fixes it. Ask the builder to price the change before you sign.

Common questions

Does an open plan kitchen fail the feng shui check?

Not on its own. It fails only when the kitchen is in a straight view from the front door. Many open plan homes put the kitchen to one side of the living area, out of sight of the entry.

Does a kitchen seen from the back door count?

No. This check is about the front door, the way visitors come in.

Is a kitchen in the centre of the house also a problem?

In most schools, yes. That is a separate check, covered in the guide on a toilet in the middle of the house, which explains why the kitchen and the toilets are kept out of the centre.
