Is a Staircase Facing the Front Door Bad Feng Shui?

Most practitioners say yes. A staircase that runs straight down to the front door is said to send the energy coming into the home rushing up the stairs, or rushing back out the door, instead of settling on the ground floor. It only applies to a home with stairs, so a single storey plan passes this check because it cannot fail it.

It is the second of the six layout checks behind the feng shui friendly label on Dudils, explained in the guide to feng shui house plans. Schools of feng shui differ on many of these rules, so treat this as a layout check, not a full reading by a practitioner.

Why does feng shui warn against stairs facing the door?

Because the stairs are the first thing the energy meets as it comes in. Practitioners say chi entering the front door rushes up the stairs, or that energy coming down the stairs runs straight out the door, and some link it to money leaving the home. The rule is about the bottom step lining up with the door, so the stairs are what you face as you walk in.

What does an architect see in a staircase facing the front door?

A crowded entry and an open upstairs. Stairs that land at the front door make the entry the busiest spot in the home, with people coming down and coming in through the same small space. The first view on arrival is a staircase rather than a room.

Sound and warm air rise straight up the stair, and the upstairs bedrooms are less private from a visitor at the door. A stair that starts beside the entry or off a hall keeps the entry calmer and the upper floor more private.

How is the stairs check read on a floor plan?

It fails when the stairs start facing the front door, so that you would walk in and face the bottom step. It passes when the stairs run across the entry, start around a corner or sit further into the home. A single storey plan has no stairs, so the check is marked not applicable and does not block the label.

How do you fix stairs that face the front door?

Soften the line between them. A rug at the foot of the stairs, a large plant or a console table between the door and the bottom step slows the path. A screen or a half height wall at the entry hides the stairs from the door. Some practitioners hang a light or a crystal above the entry.

At the design stage, turning the bottom flight or adding a landing so the stairs start side on to the door fixes it for good. It is a change a builder can price before you sign.

Common questions

Does a staircase facing the back door count?

Not for this check, which is about the front door, the main way into the home. Some practitioners also mention stairs aimed at a back door, but the rule raised most often is the front.

Are spiral stairs better feng shui?

Not usually. Many practitioners avoid spiral stairs, especially in the centre of a home, so they are not a simple fix. A straight stair turned side on to the entry is the more common answer.

Do a few steps between levels count as stairs facing the door?

Only if they run straight down to the front door. Short steps between levels away from the entry are not what the rule is about.
