North is always up, like Google Maps.

Pros

  • Light reaches the main living area from two directions.
  • Windows on two sides of the living area let a breeze through.
  • The bedrooms sit away from the living areas, so they stay quiet.

Orientation notes

Clara 16 by metricon.com.au is a single storey house drawn so its main living areas face north for free winter warmth and natural summer cooling. On this page the floor plan is rotated so north is up, the same way Google Maps shows a site.

It suits a block with the backyard to the east, where the street and driveway sit to the west.

At 8.72 metres wide by 18.23 metres deep (about 140.18 square metres of floor area), the house needs a build width of roughly 10 metres once you allow for side setbacks.

Dudils only lists this plan because an architect reviewed it and confirmed the living areas can face north on a real Australian block. Use the search on this page to check it against your own block width, depth and driveway side before you talk to the builder.
